Meet Karaline.
Hello! My name is Karaline Petty (she/her), and it’s nice to meet you.
I’ve loved math for a long time; I believe it’s a creative, playful subject, and I love to share my perspective and knowledge with other people. For four years, I tutored remedial math at the University of Oklahoma, where I learned that many students fall behind in math, not because they aren’t capable, but because they may not have adequate support. Tutoring is a way to bridge this gap and make sure every student has the resources they need.
My most significant tutoring achievement was the expansion of the Crooked Oak Mentorship program. I helped the senior class at Crooked Oak High School in Oklahoma City prepare and pass the math placement exam for the University of Oklahoma. No one from Crooked Oak had passed the math placement exam before, but two thirds of our class did. This was significant because students who don’t pass math placement exams may deemed be ineligible for financial aid.
Outside of math and tutoring, I love to read, rollerskate, and explore the Tucson outdoors. I also have a tiny cat named Jeremy. He likes to sit on my lap during zoom tutoring.

My Tutoring Philosophy.
The Socratic Method. I use the Socratic Method, a tutoring philosophy based around asking students open-ended questions to guide them towards the correct answer. This helps students take ownership over their learning and build confidence and independence.

Failing Forward. It’s important to create spaces where students feel comfortable making mistakes, as I believe they are an important part of the learning process. I help students investigate their mistakes to identify and correct their misunderstandings.

Student-Paced Learning. My expertise is in working with and planning programs for remedial math students, and I’m able to help students slow down and master the basics while staying on track with their current coursework.
Celebrating Neurodiversity. I believe all students deserve to have positive mathematical experiences, and I am able to tutor students with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences.
