Why summer math tutoring?
Summer tutoring is the best way to address learning gaps from the previous school year and to prepare for the next one. Because there is no class or homework over the summer, 100% of tutoring time is focused on strengthening essential foundational skills. There’s also less pressure to succeed which can benefit students with math anxiety or low confidence.
More Than Math’s summer tutoring program uses projects that strengthen core skills, while showing the real-world applications of classroom mathematics. Some skills we focus on are fractions, graphing, and quadratics.

Example Project: Arizona Ecosystems
In this project, students will pick an animal or plant local to Arizona, and we’ll discuss their population. What factors cause their population to increase or decrease? We’ll introduce the concept of exponential models for population, and compare the theoretical model to the real data. What’s different? What does the model lack? If appropriate, we’ll introduce carrying capacity and the logistic model.

Example Project: Code-Breaking
In this project, students will be introduced to basic cryptographic techniques, including Ceasar cyphers. We’ll design programming tools to encode and decode known cyphers and build tools to break unknown secret codes. Students may even learn about more advanced modular arithmetic and probability techniques.
